Abstract

Soil Capital Farming has been mandated to conduct a Regenerative Agriculture and Soil Carbon Sequestration Pilot Project on a specific farm located in Northern Poland. The goal of this engagement is to provide a strategic review of the farming enterprise and assess what it would take for the owner and its tenant to direct it towards a more regenerative system.

Details

Diversity is key

Crop diversity is the main driver contributing to soil life & natural fertility improvements. Many farms in Poland are "block-farmed", meaning that the farm units are cultivated as independent blocks, resulting in a significant loss of diversity. In our mission, we are assessing all the possibilities in terms of market to diversify the crop rotation while maintaining profitability at similar or higher levels. We also study how best to switch from synthetic to organic inputs, and improve soil health and biodiversity by reducing tillage and improving soil cover.

Carbon is the driver of the transition

Such transitions deliver better soil health and biodiversity outcomes while maintaining financial results. We manage to obtain better GHG and operational results at farm level, when transitioning from a net emitter to a sequestering farming system. Hence, positioning the enterprise amongst the leaders in farming transitions.

Transition strategy design as a model for change

When approved and implemented, these transition strategies serve as model to initiate change and innovation in the local farming sector. We believe these designs serve as an innovative and sustainable tool to review today’s farming sectors, more specifically the relationship between landowners and tenants.
