Abstract

Since 2019, we are gradually implementing a holistic grazing plan in a large-scale private farm in the humid Pampa of Argentina. After 2 years of small-scale trials and demonstrations, coupled with progressive training of the ranch management team, we then extended the system to a larger scale with success. In 2023, the farm is set to redesign almost 50% of its grasslands area to holistic planned grazing.

Details

What is holistic planned grazing?

Holistic planned grazing is a decision-making process based on charting grazing rotations that considers the time a plant is exposed to grazing animals in order to best plan the recovery of the plant. The core idea is to mimic the natural relationship between soil, plant, herbivores, and manage complexity while ensuring long-term land regeneration, animal health and welfare, and profitability.

Holistic Planned Grazing helps ensure that livestock are in the right place, at the right time, and with the right behaviour.

Focus on staff training

Cattle ranching is based on 3 core pillars: livestock, grassland, and people. In order to carry out this management change, we make sure the people in charge of livestock can fully acquire the fundamentals of this new approach and take ownership of the transition to become autonomous as fast as possible.

In this context, we have conducted numerous training workshops and awareness raising actions. We also encouraged the farm manager to follow the complete holistic management training course organised by the Savory institute.

Monitoring land regeneration

In order to assess the impacts of these practice changes, we monitor key indicators of ecosystem function such as soil health and biodiversity on these grasslands. We rely on the EOV protocol (ecological outcome verification) which allows to identify trends in the overall health of a landscape and provides essential information to the farmer as a steward and land manager.

While ecosystem impacts will be measured on the long run (5 to 10 years), we can already report clear improvements in livestock parameters such as stocking rate and weaning weight leading to a sustained increase of 20% in meat production (kg/ Ha), despite rainfall that was 30% lower than in previous years.
