Abstract

Since 2020, SCF has been involved at implementing regenerative agriculture practices and carbon measurement for a group of 20 barley producers in Argentina to design and implement the adequate strategy to transition their farm toward regenerative agriculture principles whilst optimizing profitability.

Carbon baselining and yearly measurements

The carbon balance of a farm is a key indicator of the agroecological health and resilience of a system. Each farming season we collect data from each producer to calculate their GHG footprint, and thus compare results specific to malting barley, over time and space (across farms and years).

We also evaluate and compare production costs of regenerative vs conventional barley. Altogether, we design farming systems that restores the natural fertility of the land and captures more carbon that it emits.

Agronomical support, soil health training, awareness raising actions

We develop and organise different forms of interaction with producers to make them aware of the benefits of regenerative agriculture and the positive impacts on their farm. We conduct various technical training workshops on natural soil fertility, introduction to cover crops and reduction of synthetic fertilisers.

Design and implementation of a new regenerative barley crop protocol

In order to standardise but also to better compare and encourage barley producers, we helped establish a specific protocol for regenerative malting barley. This technical specifications makes it possible to evaluate and encourage each producer to evolve on the basis of his agronomy profile by following the main principles of RegenAg.
